Calling All New Scouts!!!
Are you ready for the scouting adventure of a lifetime? Come to Gorham Scout Ranch and attend Brownsea 22 (Double-Two) camp from June 8-14, 2025 to experience an exciting week of camping and to enjoy Scouting at its best. We are looking for Scouts age 11-13 who have not advanced beyond the rank of First Class.

The Brownsea 22 camp is an outdoor Scouting adventure for individual Scouts based upon the concept of the very first Scout camp conducted by Lord Baden-Powell on Brownsea Island in the year 1907. The methods he tested at this camp became the core of the Scouting program – the Patrol Method of Scouting and learning relevant Scout skills through stories, games, competition, and FUN! Think of it like the ORIGINAL First Year Camper program. At camp, individuals are placed into Patrols of six to eight Scouts from Troops all over the Council who will eat, sleep, learn and compete together for the entire week. All of these Patrols make up the Brownsea linked Troops (male and female) and the Brownsea Troops are conducted as model Troops 24/7 for the duration of camp.

The program is carefully organized and led by a staff of experienced adult Scouters and a youth leadership corps of older Scouts selected because of their experience and dedication. During the week, each Scout will learn a TON of Scout skills, how an ideal Scout Troop functions, the Patrol Method, as well as the history of Scouting and some of the original games, skills and stories that provided the spark that became the largest youth movement in the world.

While Brownsea 22 is a great program for any Scout, it is most beneficial for Scouts that are in the first 1-3 years of their Scouting career and are First Class or lower in rank. In addition to utilizing the Patrol Method and covering approximately 40% of content required for rank advancement through First Class, Scouts will also get their first tastes of leadership in their Brownsea Patrol and Troop. Each Scout has the opportunity to see how the Patrol and Troop operates by serving in different leadership roles throughout the week and through the experience of participant leaders taking over execution of the Troop activities about halfway through the course (under staff guidance, of course). Brownsea 22 builds exceptional Scouts so that later on National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) can build on those foundations to build great leaders.
All participants attending Brownsea 22 are responsible for understanding and following all directions below as well as any information and directions in subsequent communication with Council administration and/or Brownsea senior leadership. The Brownsea 22 program is best suited to younger and/or inexperienced scouts. Generally, participants are 11-13 years of age and have not advanced beyond the rank of First Class. However, exceptions can be made under extraordinary circumstances and on a case-by-case basis. Any exceptional circumstances should be discussed with the Brownsea Course Director prior to registering a participant.

In late April or early May, registered participants will receive an informational letter that will contain directions to camp, gear list, general guidelines for preparing for camp, and information regarding logistics surrounding start and end of camp – PLEASE SAVE THIS LETTER FOR FUTURE REFERENCE!!!

Please bring a COPY of completed BSA Medical Form Parts A, B, & C, with doctor’s signature (see form below), to camp and deliver to Brownsea Course Director at time of registration. Medical forms will be returned at the end of camp.
