Merger News
The executive board of the Great Southwest Council and the executive board of the Yucca Council are pleased to announce that after thorough consideration and votes of approval by the voting members of both Councils, the two Councils will be merged into one Council. This will form a singular New Mexico non-profit organization, which will house offices in both Albuquerque and El Paso. Today's announcement is the culmination of over two years of collaboration between the two Councils. Both Councils began doing business together including the sharing of staff, volunteers, and other resources over two years ago.
There are many details to be worked out over the coming weeks and months and we will share details as appropriate. During this transitional time, our intent is to make this change low-impact to units, while improving services they receive from the Council. We have structured the merger so that unit leaders can continue to focus on doing what they do best – leading their Scouts on the Scouting Journey.
The first and most exciting step of the merger process is selecting a new name and patch design for our new Council. Please see the attached document below which describes the naming and patch design contest. It has an open call for suggestions from Scout youth of our new Council name and Council shoulder patch design. This is an important part of our future and the name and design chosen will last forever in the new Council. The winning Scout will receive a complimentary week at Gorham Scout Ranch or a Day Camp in 2025.
