Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge Clinic

Scouts are often called upon to help because they know first aid and they know about the discipline and planning needed to react to an emergency situation. Earning Emergency Preparedness merit badge helps a Scout to be prepared by learning the actions that can be helpful and needed before, during, and after an emergency. The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is partnering with Council to offer this merit badge. Peter Brisbine is a Scouter, Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge Counselor, State CERT Coordinator and Local Preparedness Coordinator Supervisor for New Mexico. He and his team invite Great Southwest Council Scouts to learn Emergency Preparedness from the people who protect our New Mexico communities. Here’s what they have in store for you:

  • Tour of the Emergency Operations Center
  • Excellent E Prep swag
  • Emergency service practice drill (Requirement 7a)
  • Registered Scouts will receive a personal emergency service pack for a mobilization call (Requirement 8b)
  • Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training teaches volunteers how to prepare for and respond to disasters that may affect their communities. CERT programs are available online and some of the modules will cover requirements for the E Prep merit badge. Units may wish to become a Community Emergency Response Team. Mr. Brisbine can assist you with that.
  • All requirements will be taught the day of the event. Scouts will need to “Prepare a family emergency kit (suitcase or waterproof box) for use by your family in case an emergency evacuation is needed (Requirement 8b). Please prepare this kit at home and either bring it or take photographs so that you can explain them to your counselor.

As usual, we will enjoy pizza lunch and excellent instruction. Blue Cards will be provided. Scouts should arrive in Class A uniform with a day pack, essentials, and notebook and pen. Scouts, please read the entire merit badge book and complete any prerequisites before the class date.  Merit badge workbooks to write out answers are optional, but helpful: http://usscouts.org/mb/worksheets/list.asp

Parking Instructions
We will have everyone park in the green shaded area on the map. Do not approach the main gate. After you turn in the main driveway, there is a visitor lot on the right-hand side everyone will want to park in. Once everyone arrives, we’ll escort everyone and their vehicles to the green roofed building marked “Department of Homeland Security”. There is enough room in the south lot. If the visitor lot fills up, we’ll escort smaller groups up one at a time.
When it comes time to pickup lunch, we’ll escort whoever is leaving down to the gate and then meet again in the visitor lot for escort back up to our building.
