BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) Training Introduction:

BALOO training is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack camping overnighters and WEBELOS den overnighters. This training is presented and lead by council or district level training teams as needed.

In 2018, there was an updated to the BALOO training and the new BALOO course combines the previous BALOO and a course called Outdoor Leader Skills for WEBELOS Leaders, or OWL.

BALOO training is comprised of two components—an online component and a practical, hands-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a “TRAINED” Cub Scout outdo or leader.

·         The online component must be completed prior to the practical component. The online training contains introductory and basic information that will be built upon during the practical training.

·         The Outdoor component is completed over a weekend. Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right.

The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. Instructors will help you learn how to set up camp, cook, work with woods tools and about ropes, first aid, planning campfire programs, map reading and compass skills, hiking and packing techniques, nature identification, and Leave No Trace. Each outdoor session will bring to life the pages of the Boy Scout Handbook to help you deliver the promise of Scouting to yourself and the youth you serve. It will increase your comfort level and give you confidence as a trained, skilled leader. The program will also give you the opportunity to work with other Scout leaders from your area, meet new friends, and reinforce skill techniques with fellow unit leaders.

Who is Eligible to Attend? Any adult involved in Cub Scouts with a desire to plan and carry out an entry level outdoor experience for their Pack. This is the first step in the BSA outdoor training program. Each Cub Scout Pack overnight event must be under the direction of a BALOO trained adult. Additionally, this new and improved course includes the training that all WEBELOS Den Leaders need to be able to plan & conduct (and survive) a WEBELOS Den overnight campout.

New Online Required Prerequisite: To receive BALOO training certificate, you must attend this outdoor course AND complete the online BALOO Prerequisite Training course (see box above). Please bring your printed certificate of completion to this course.
