National Youth Leadership Training is a six-day outdoor experience for youth leaders. It supports the Scout leader responsibility to train youth leaders. Participants sleep in tents, prepare their own meals by patrols, learn life skills, and live by the Scout Oath and Law. Training youth leaders is a critical component for helping individual Scouts and Scout Units to grow. The Boy Scouts of America developed the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course, a valuable learning experience for educating youth leaders. The Great Southwest Council offers NYLT annually.

 

Goals of NYLT:

For the Scout: A Scout will be walk away from NYLT with:

  • Confidence and knowledge to lead the unit program

  • Basic knowledge of the eleven skills of leadership and help them relate these skills to their unit’s responsibilities including Communication, Goals and how to set Plans to achieve them and Ethical Decision Making

  • Introduction to the Leaders who set the foundation for the Scouting movement

  • Opportunity to make friends, share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other units

  • Create an atmosphere in which Scouts will experience the patrol method

  • Prerequisite for attending National Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) – Scouting’s premiere youth National Training Program at Philmont.

For the Scout Leader: In addition to investing in the Scout the benefits listed above, you should expect:

  • The relationship between the Scout and his or her Scout leader to be strengthened

  • The Scout to understand the importance a Youth Led Unit – what it looks like, sounds like

  • help lead a PLC – they will participate in a Patrol Leader Conference and will understand how to plan a meeting via the Seven-Step Unit Meeting Plan

  • run a proper Flag Ceremony and be able to plan a campfire

  • have the ability to teach / lead via Tuckman’s Model and EDGE method

  • have seen demonstrated, helped run, and understands the patrol method

come back to the unit ready to lead

 

Who is encouraged to attend?

Leaders (current and future). We are a co-ed national program serving Boy Scouts and Venturing Scouts all of whom may participate in the NYLT course in patrols that includes Scouts from other units that they typically have not met. If you are involved in any leadership position or a member of the Order of the Arrow (or hope to be), this course is for you. Youth of all ages benefit.

Each course participant must be of sufficient maturity and experience as reflected in these requirements:

  • First Class Scout (for Scouts BSA). Note that in 2019 this requirement will waived for girls in Scouts BSA Troops,

  • At least 13 years old

  • Serving, or likely to serve, in a youth leadership position

  • Venturing/Sea Scouts

  • The Scout should also have a strong personal desire to attend the course

 

NYLT builds leaders. We are not in a position to tolerate behavior not reflective of the Scout Oath and Law. We will work with parents and scouts to make sure each attendant has the opportunity to complete the course, but not at the expense of the course or other attendees.
 

What to arrive and leave?

  • Check-in: 11:00 AM on Sunday, June 2

Departure: 9:30 AM on Saturday, June 8, after course graduation.

 

What is the cost?

 

Course Fee Per Participant:

$50 non refundable deposit to make reservation

$310 total registration fee due paid in full by May 15

After May 15, a late fee of $50 will be applied to new registrants and to accounts that have not paid in full.

  • The course fee includes all meals, program supplies, a commemorative T-shirt, and other recognition items. The fee does not include personal purchases at the trading post. An early registration discount will apply IF registration is completed and full payment received by the appropriate deadlines.

  • A non-refundable deposit of $50 must accompany the registration form.

  • If you pay by check, please note “NYLT” on your check.

  • Due to food purchases, additional registrations after May 3rd are discouraged. All fees are non-refundable after this date.

  • The course will be limited to 48 participants; so early registration is encouraged.

Is the home unit Scout Leader involved?

Yes.  This is a National course run by The Great Southwest Council and designed to support and build upon the Scout Leaders’ efforts. Every Scout Leader will be contacted by the course director prior to NYLT. A Scout Leader can attend NYLT for the day in a supporting role – and is encouraged to do so by contacting the Course Director.

In addition, the Scout Leader will assist the Scout complete to items upon returning back to their unit:

  • 1st - Review with the Scout Leader what the participant has learned and how the did during the course.
  • 2nd - Completion of one commitment the participant made during NYLT

 

Is any special equipment required?

An equipment list will be sent to each participant with his or her course confirmation in May. Each participant should bring their official Scout Field Uniform and scouting T-Shirts.

This is a Leadership camp. Please ensure that badges are properly placed and that the Scout Uniform is worn correctly. For Scout or Varsity participants, the uniform required for the course is the tan scout shirt with green or orange epaulette and any of the green scout pants or shorts. For Venturing participants, the uniform required for the course is the spruce green Venturing shirt with green epaulette tabs and gray backpacking style shorts or gray casual pants.

 

Are any forms required?

  • Completed registration and Scout Leader Approval forms must be turned in by May 3, 2019.

  • Completed Personal Health and Medical Record (A, B and C) that will be less than one year old at the time camp ends must be turned in at registration. This is the same medical form required for summer camp. Forms are available in the participant packet, from the Council Website or the Council Service Center.
