First half of Level II Climbing Instructor Certification or Level 1 Cert

Level II Climbing Instructor Certification for Adults (21 and over).  Two weekends are necessary the second weekend is in September Dates will be decided at the May training.  If you only compete the May training you will be certified as Level 1 and you need only be 18.  Level 1 assistants cannot take scouts climbing without a level 2 instructor.  If you need to recertify or are an experienced climber please contact

**** Course starts at 8 AM Friday Morning****

 

This course is for adults (21+) interested in certifying as a Trained Level II Climbing Instructor and will take place at two locations, 1. Gorham Scout Ranch’s Climbing facilitates Friday and Saturday and 2. Ranger Rock Tijeras Sunday (this location can change depending on where participants are from).  You must be a registered Scout or Scouter and at least 21 years old to take this course. Level 2 training is a six-day course per BSA regulations.  The Level 2 instructor training card is good for 3 (three) years.  If you only attend the first weekend of training you will be certified as Level 1 and your certification is only good for one year.

Knots: Figure 8, Figure 8 follow-through, Figure 8 on-a-bight, Inline Eight, Bowline, Double Loop Bowline, Canadian Eight, Water Knot, Double Fisherman’s Knot, Prusik, Klimheist, Quad, Clove Hitch, Butterfly, Basket Hitch, Munter Hitch, Munter Mule, Autoblock.  You will be required to complete an open book pretest before arrival Friday morning. 

 

BRING WITH YOU:

BSA # 680-001 (or current) medical form filled out and signed by a doctor - Required!  No exceptions!

  • A positive attitude and current physical form!
  • Optional: Helmet, harness and climbing shoes. Personal equipment must be inspected by a Director.  (Please do not bring any personal or unit climbing hardware).
  • Tent, sleeping bag and pad, hiking boots, daypack, water bottle and other personal equipment
  • Please eat Friday breakfast before arriving at camp.
  • Rain gear and clothing suitable for the New Mexico weather – Long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended!
  • Leather gloves used only for climbing

WE WILL “CAMP” in an available camp site. Check in with the course director at the dining hall when you first arrive at camp, and then park in the parking lot (facing the road, of course) after unloading your gear in the camping area. Feel free to arrive at camp on Thursday evening (Bring your own food for Thursday evening, Friday breakfast and lunch). Classes will begin promptly at 8 AM Friday morning at the dining hall.  We will try to conclude the training by 4:00 PM on Sunday. Water will be available at the dinning hall.
